The petition “Your will be done” calls believers to surrender their personal will and align themselves with God’s righteous purposes, even when it requires sacrifice. “Give us this day our daily bread” teaches dependence on God for both physical provision and spiritual nourishment through Christ, the Bread of Life. Together, these petitions emphasize obedience, grace, and total reliance on God for every aspect of life.
“Your will be done”
Introduction
This is the third petition in the Lord’s Prayer.
It expands on the previous petition: “Your kingdom come.”
God’s kingdom means God’s rule and dominion.
Within God’s kingdom, His will must prevail.
Believers are called to align their will with God’s will.
The Collision of Wills
Jesus models this in the Garden of Gethsemane:
“Not my will, but Your will be done.”
Following Christ means taking up our cross.
The cross is experienced where:
Our will
God’s will
collide.
Practical Meaning
Human beings naturally resist parts of God’s will.
Spiritual conflict often comes from this clash of wills.
Christian maturity requires surrendering personal desires to God.
Peace Through Alignment
Peace comes through righteousness.
Righteousness comes through alignment with God’s will.
Anxiety, turmoil, and inner disorder often flow from resistance to God’s will.
The Need for Grace
Human beings cannot transform themselves.
Philippians 2:13 teaches that God works in us:
To will
To act according to His purpose.
Grace enables obedience and transformation.
Heaven as the Model
Psalm 103:20
The angels obey the voice of God.
Heaven is the place where God’s will is perfectly fulfilled.
Believers are called to imitate that obedience.
Jesus as the Example
John 6:38
Jesus came to do the Father’s will.
Believers are called to follow His example of obedience and surrender.
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”
Asking God Daily
God desires believers to ask Him for provision.
Matthew 7:7–8 teaches:
Ask
Seek
Knock
Prayer aligns human desires with God’s will.
Two Meanings of Daily Bread
1.Natural Bread
God cares about physical needs:
Food
Provision
Work
Daily life
Believers should ask God for practical daily sustenance.
2.Supernatural Bread
John 6:35
Jesus declares: “I am the bread of life.”
Daily bread points spiritually to Christ Himself.
It also points to the sacrament of communion.
Through communion, believers receive grace and strength to do God’s will.
Dependence on God
Proverbs 3:6
Believers are to acknowledge God in all things.
Christianity is not merely one compartment of life.
God is concerned with both:
Spiritual life
Physical life
Spiritual Priority
Jesus teaches that eternal realities are greater than temporal needs.
“Man shall not live by bread alone.”
Spiritual sustenance is greater than material sustenance.
The Christian life prioritizes eternal life over worldly comfort.
Fasting and Spiritual Discipline
Fasting teaches dependence on God rather than physical satisfaction.
It lifts the believer toward spiritual focus and surrender.
Prayer and fasting work together to orient life toward God.
