The Sixth Commandment calls sexuality to be ordered within lifelong covenant marriage between one man and one woman. Sexual acts outside this covenant distort God’s design by separating intimacy from unity and procreation. The Gospel provides the remedy for sexual sin and marital failure through repentance, forgiveness, and restored covenant faithfulness.
Deuteronomy 5:18
‘And you shall not commit adultery.
Matthew 5:27-28
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Homosexuality
Sexual relations between persons of the same sex.
Considered intrinsically and gravely disordered.
Distinguished from fornication because it contradicts natural sexual complementarity.
It is contrary to nature in both inclination and effect.
It does not allow procreation.
The procreative end is intrinsic to marital sexuality.
Its sterility reflects its opposition to natural sexual design.
Modern culture normalizes what is historically and biologically non-normative.
Truth must be spoken in love.
All sexual acts outside marriage are sin.
Other immoral practices include rape, incest, bestiality, and pedophilia.
The Purpose of Marriage
Sexual sins are ultimately sins against marriage.
Now we define what sexuality is properly ordered toward.
Sexuality is ordered toward lifelong covenant love between one man and one woman.
Sex is both biological and spiritual.
It functions as sign and seal of the marital covenant.
Three Purposes of Sexual Union
Unitive Purpose
“The two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).
Sexual union consummates and seals marital unity.
It binds husband and wife together.
Legitimate Pleasure
Within marriage, pleasure is good and intended (1 Corinthians 7:3–5).
The marital act includes mutual self-gift.
Ordered pleasure is part of God’s design.
Procreative Purpose
“Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28).
Children are a blessing (Psalm 127:3).
Procreation is a natural and intended end of sexual union.
Parenthood forms selflessness and sanctification.
Sins Against Marriage
Adultery
Sexual infidelity where at least one party is married.
Violates covenant faithfulness.
Dishonors the sacred sign of marriage.
Harms children and weakens the institution of marriage
Divorce
Two positions are recognized:
Permitted only in cases of adultery.
Not permitted under any condition.
Divorce disrupts family order.
Marriage is a lifelong covenant.
“What God has joined, let no man separate.”
The Gospel as the Answer
Divorce is attributed to hardness of heart (Matthew 19).
Forgiveness is central to the Christian life (Matthew 6:14–15).
Refusal to forgive contradicts the Gospel.
The parable of the unforgiving servant teaches that forgiven people must forgive.
