The Apostles’ Creed asserts Christ’s resurrection, His ascension, His position of authority at the right hand of the Father, and His glorious return to judge the living and the dead. Jesus’ resurrection was unique: carried out by His own power, in a glorified and incorruptible body, and is the guarantee of our future resurrection. Now exalted in heaven, He intercedes for us as King and High Priest, and He will return in glory to fulfill the hope of His Church.
The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Resurrection
This is the most important point of Christ’s life and of the Christian faith.
It was not a mere reanimation; He was dead for three days and rose in a glorified, incorruptible body.
Christ resurrected by His own power (cf. John 10:18), distinct from other resurrections recorded in Scripture.
His resurrection is the “firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20), assuring our future resurrection.
The Ascension of Christ
Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:3).
He returned to the glory He shared with the Father before the incarnation (John 17:5).
Now He intercedes for us (Romans 8:34).
He sent the Holy Spirit as the Comforter (John 16:7).
Christ at the Right Hand of the Father
To sit at the right hand of the Father means He holds authority (Ephesians 1:20–22).
He rules and acts as both King and High Priest.
He intercedes for us and gives us access to God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:14–16).
The Return of Christ
“From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.”
No one knows the day or hour of His return (Matthew 24:36).
There will be clear signs: apostasy and the appearance of the Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4).
Christ will return for a victorious and glorious Church.
