This section of the Apostles’ Creed affirms the divinity, humanity, and lordship of Jesus Christ, the only Son of God. It confesses that He was conceived supernaturally by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, fully assuming human nature without ceasing to be God. To recognize Jesus as Lord means to surrender our entire life to Him in obedience, faith, and devotion.
The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
“And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, Our Lord”
Jesus is the second person of the Trinity, the Eternal Word (John 1:1).
He is equal in essence, worth, and eternity to the Father and the Holy Spirit.
John 1:14: The Word became flesh — God took human form.
Jesus is the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5–6).
His name “Jesus” means “God saves” (Yeshua = Yahweh + Shua).
He is Christ because He was anointed by God as King, Priest, and Prophet (Acts 10:38).
He is Lord because He reigns with authority over creation and the Church (1 Timothy 6:15).
The Lordship of Christ
His Lordship implies that He must have total authority over our lives.
It is not enough to call Him “Savior”; He must also be our Lord (Romans 10:9).
Christ cares about every aspect of our life in holiness, devotion, and truth.
We must submit to Him: “Your will be done, not mine.”
“Who was conceived by the power and grace of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary”
Christ had no human father; He was conceived supernaturally by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35).
He assumed human nature through Mary, and divine nature through the Holy Spirit.
Mary is recognized as Theotokos (God-bearer), mother of the second person of the Trinity.
Galatians 4:4: Jesus was born of a woman, in the fullness of time.
The flesh of Christ was formed from the flesh of Mary — she participated in the incarnation.
Mary is worthy of honor for her obedience and submission to the will of God (Luke 1:28, 1:48).
