Rejecting the Holy Spirit happens progressively through unbelief, disobedience, and unrepentance, each distancing the believer from God’s presence. The most serious form is persistent refusal to repent, which ultimately leads to spiritual separation. Believers are called to respond with humility, obedience, and love, maintaining a posture that welcomes the Holy Spirit’s transforming work.

Rejecting the Spirit
Pastor Joel Roberto Guajardo

Introduction

  • Prayer requires proper spiritual posture to receive from the Holy Spirit.

  • There is both a right and wrong way to posture ourselves before God.

  • Improper posture results in rejecting the Holy Spirit.

  • This topic is often neglected, even in circles with strong teaching on the Holy Spirit.

  • Just as we learn how to accept the Spirit, we must also understand how we reject Him.

Three Ways We Reject the Holy Spirit

1.We Resist Him in Unbelief

  • The Holy Spirit convicts the world of:

    • Sin

    • Righteousness

    • Judgment (John 16)

  • His role is to reveal the truth of our interior life.

  • God desires truth in the inward parts (Psalm 51).

Resisting the Spirit

  • Resistance happens when we reject conviction.

  • Like boarding up windows, we block out the light of God.

  • Sin, ignorance, and pride create obstacles to His work.

  • Acts 7:51 — resisting the Holy Spirit is linked to hardness of heart.

Root Issue

  • Pride leads to resistance.

  • Humility removes obstacles and cooperates with grace.

  • Love must be reciprocated — not just received.

  • Refusing to love God in return is resisting the Holy Spirit.

2.We Grieve Him in Disobedience

Ephesians 4:30 — “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.”

  • The Holy Spirit is a person, not a force.

  • Sin is primarily an offense against God.

What Grieving Means

  • Sin damages our relationship with Him.

  • Like any relationship, offense creates distance.

  • A grieved person withdraws from fellowship.

Key Truth

  • The Holy Spirit dwells within us as our closest companion.

  • Ongoing sin disrupts that relationship.

  • Living in righteousness keeps us aligned with Him.

3.We Quench Him in Unrepentance

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:19 — “Do not quench the Spirit.”

  • The Holy Spirit is revealed as fire, which can be extinguished.

Progression of Rejection

  1. Unbelief → resisting

  2. Disobedience → grieving

  3. Unrepentance → quenching

  • Habitual, unrepentant sin extinguishes spiritual fire.

  • It is like putting out a holy fire on the altar of the heart.

Serious Consequence

  • Continued unrepentance leads to loss of the Spirit’s presence.

  • Psalm 51 — David feared the Spirit being taken from him.

  • The gravity of sin determines the seriousness of consequence.

The Sin Against the Holy Spirit

  • Matthew 12:32 — sin against the Spirit is not forgiven.

What It Is

  • Persistent rejection of:

    • Conviction

    • Repentance

    • God’s grace

  • It is:

    • Refusing to confess sin

    • Rejecting the Spirit’s work

    • Living in unrepentance until death

Key Insight

  • The unforgivable sin is never asking for forgiveness.

  • As long as a person lives, repentance is still possible.

  • Final rejection occurs when a person dies in sin without repentance.

Call to Response

  • Grow closer to the Holy Spirit.

  • Accept Him in faith.

  • Cooperate with Him in obedience.

  • Exalt Him in love through prayer.

  • Remove obstacles and open your heart to His work.
