Romans 8 teaches that the Holy Spirit gives life, adopts believers into God’s family, frees them from condemnation, and leads them toward conformity to Christ. Paul emphasizes that nothing can separate God’s children from the love of Christ. Romans 9 begins Paul’s explanation of Israel’s role in God’s salvation plan, showing that God remains faithful and that righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through the Law.

The Spirit of Life

  • Romans 8 can be understood as “The Spirit of Life.”

  • The Holy Spirit applies the work of Christ to believers.

  • The Spirit gives new life now and points believers toward resurrection life in the future.

Adoption by the Spirit

  • The Holy Spirit is given to every believer.

  • Through faith in Christ, believers receive the Spirit of adoption.

  • By the Spirit, believers cry, “Abba, Father.”

  • Adoption is complete in position, but also continues as a process of learning to live as God’s children.

No Condemnation in Christ

  • There is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus.

  • Believers have a righteousness that is not their own.

  • God sees His children as justified by faith.

  • The Christian life is the process of learning to live as part of God’s family.

Spirit-Thinking and Spirit-Living

  • Believers are born of the Spirit into God’s family.

  • Their minds must learn the new family way of Spirit-thinking.

  • Spirit-living flows from Spirit-thinking.

  • Those who belong to the Spirit think and act by the Spirit.

The Spirit of Glory

  • Creation is groaning because believers live in the “not yet” of redemption.

  • Redemption has begun, but complete glorification has not yet come.

  • Creation longs for the glorification of God’s people.

  • When believers are glorified, creation itself will also be glorified.

The Spirit’s Power

  • Believers need the power of the Holy Spirit to follow Jesus and be fruitful.

  • The document connects spiritual groaning with the work and gifts of the Spirit.

  • Speaking in the Spirit is presented as part of the Christian experience.

  • The Spirit builds believers up in faith.

Predestined to Be Like Christ

  • Romans 8 teaches that believers are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ.

  • The destination of the believer is to become like Jesus.

  • The Holy Spirit empowers believers to be what they are called to be.

  • God’s purpose is that His children think, act, and are glorified like Christ.

God’s Inseparable Love

  • Believers are children of God by the Spirit of adoption.

  • Their identity as God’s children is not in jeopardy.

  • Nothing can separate believers from the love of Christ.

  • Not even heavenly or earthly powers can separate God’s children from His love.

Israel in God’s Plan

  • Romans 9 begins the national section of Romans.

  • Israel’s failure is personally devastating to Paul and should be viewed with sympathy.

God’s Promises to Israel

  • Paul shows that God has been faithful to Israel.

  • Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises given to Israel.

  • God remains faithful through Israel’s success and failure.

Physical Israel and Spiritual Israel

  • Paul explains a distinction between physical Israel and spiritual Israel.

  • Physical Israel refers to the Jewish people.

  • Spiritual Israel refers to all who receive Christ by faith.

  • God’s salvation plan now includes Jews and Gentiles in the Messiah.

The Stumbling Block

  • Israel tried to obtain righteousness through the Law.

  • The problem is that righteousness has always come through Abrahamic faith.

  • Jesus became a stumbling block to those who insisted on working their way toward God.
