Romans 3 shows that both Jews and Gentiles are guilty before God and that righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not through the works of the Law. Jesus is the propitiation for sin, the fulfillment of what the mercy seat and Day of Atonement pointed toward.

The Jewish Advantage

  • Paul shows that the Jews do have an advantage because they received the Scriptures.

  • Even when Israel was unfaithful, God remained faithful to His promises.

  • God is faithful not only in mercy, but also in judgment.

  • God’s judgment proves that He does what He says.

Grace Is Not Permission to Sin

  • Paul addresses the accusation that grace encourages sin.

  • The Gospel of grace does not lead believers into lawlessness.

  • True grace makes the believer hate sin and desire righteousness.

  • The ends do not justify sinful means.

All Have Sinned

  • Romans 1 shows that the Gentiles have sinned.

  • Romans 2 shows that the Jews have sinned.

  • Romans 3 declares that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  • The Law exposes sin but cannot defeat it.

The Law and Human Guilt

  • The Law shows the distance between humanity and God.

  • The Law makes people conscious of sin.

  • Both Jews and Gentiles are under the power of sin.

  • The whole world stands guilty before God.

Righteousness Through Faith

  • Paul announces that the righteousness of God has now been revealed apart from the Law.

  • This righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Both Jews and Gentiles must believe in Christ.

  • The new era of salvation centers on faith, not boasting in works.

Jesus as Propitiation

  • Jesus is the propitiation for our sins.

  • The mercy seat and the Day of Atonement point forward to Christ.

  • Jesus’ blood covers the sins of His people.

  • God deals with the problem of sin by sending His Son.

No Room for Boasting

  • Human boasting is excluded because God is the one who saves.

  • No one can claim to have fixed the problem of sin.

  • Jews cannot boast in works, and Gentiles cannot boast in themselves.

  • Salvation is received through faith in Christ.

The Law of Love

  • The Mosaic Law is not destroyed, but upheld.

  • Believers do not treat the Law as worthless.

  • In the new era, believers walk in the Law of Love.

  • The standard of love is even higher and must be lived out by faith.
