Romans 10–11 teaches that righteousness comes through faith in Christ and that Jesus is the fulfillment and goal of the Law. Paul explains that God has not rejected Israel completely, but that both Jews and Gentiles must be joined to God’s people through faith in Christ. Romans 12 moves into practical application, calling believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices and be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

God’s Righteousness by Faith

  • Israel had zeal for God, but their zeal was shaped by religious pride.

  • They focused on the “race” but missed the “finish line.”

  • God’s purpose for Israel was that they would become a blessing to the nations.

  • Paul shows that righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through ethnic or religious pride.

Jesus Is the Final Word

  • Jesus is God’s final word about righteousness.

  • He is the goal and fulfillment of the Law.

  • The Law was meant to lead people to Christ.

  • If someone misses Jesus, they miss the point of the Law.

Everyone Must Call on the Lord

  • Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  • There is no ethnic or cultural requirement for salvation.

  • What is required is a believing heart and a confessing mouth.

  • Both Israel and the Gentiles need Jesus.

Israel’s Failure to Hear

  • Israel refused to hear the word of Christ.

  • God had spoken through Moses, the prophets, and the disciples.

  • Paul shows that God had been calling out to Israel all along.

  • Jesus is the goal and final word on righteousness.

The Remnant

  • God has not rejected Israel completely.

  • Paul himself is proof that God is still working among the Jews.

  • God preserved a faithful remnant.

  • Some were hardened because they chose unbelief.

Corporate Election and Personal Faith

  • Paul speaks about Israel corporately.

  • Not every person within corporate Israel believed.

  • Belief is how a person is saved.

  • A person can belong to the elected people outwardly and still fall through unbelief.

The Gentiles Grafted In

  • Paul teaches that the Gentiles have been grafted into Israel’s holy root.

  • The Gentile church must not look down on the Jews.

  • Israel is the root, and Gentile believers are branches grafted in by grace.

  • God’s mercy brings Gentiles into the people of God through faith in Christ.

How All Israel Will Be Saved

  • Paul teaches that Israel is saved in the same way everyone is saved: through faith in Christ.

  • Israel is not saved by ethnicity alone.

  • Jews must be grafted in by faith.

  • Jesus is the last word on God’s righteousness

Living Sacrifice

  • Romans 12 begins the practical application of the Gospel.

  • Because of God’s mercy, believers are called to present their bodies as living sacrifices.

  • This includes the whole life of the believer.

  • Faith must be lived out in practical obedience.

Renewing the Mind

  • Believers must not be conformed to the patterns of this world.

  • They must be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

  • Paul wants the truths of Romans to reshape their thinking.

  • Renewed minds allow the Church to discern and live out the will of God.
