Romans 2 shows that the Jews, like the Gentiles, are without excuse before God because possessing the Law does not make a person righteous. Paul teaches that the real problem is the hardness of the human heart, which can only be changed through faith in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. True belonging to the people of God is not merely outward or religious, but inward, spiritual, and created by the Spirit.

Jews and Gentiles Are Without Excuse

  • In Romans 1, Paul shows that the Gentiles are without excuse.

  • In Romans 2, Paul shows that the Jews are also without excuse.

  • Possessing the Law does not make someone righteous.

  • Both Jews and Gentiles stand guilty before God.

The Problem of Hypocrisy

  • Paul confronts those who judge others while practicing sin themselves.

  • The Jews had the Law, but they did not perfectly keep it.

  • Legalism creates excuses and arbitrary lines.

  • Breaking one part of the Law makes a person guilty before God.

The Heart Issue

  • The deepest problem is not only behavior, but the heart.

  • Humanity has hard hearts toward God.

  • A hard heart rejects God as Creator and resists His commands.

  • The heart must be changed through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Need for Regeneration

  • Jeremiah prophesied that God would remove the heart of stone.

  • Through saving faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit gives a heart of flesh.

  • Regeneration makes it possible to receive God, confess sin, and desire holiness.

  • Apart from this work of God, it is impossible to please Him.

God Does Not Show Favoritism

  • Paul teaches that God does not play favorites.

  • The Jews could not rely on their history, knowledge, or possession of Scripture.

  • Special revelation does not help a person who still has a hard heart.

  • Knowing Scripture without obedience can become judgment rather than life.

  • General revelation is God’s witness through creation and conscience.

  • Special revelation is God’s witness through Scripture and the prophets.

  • The Gentiles failed with general revelation.

  • The Jews failed even with special revelation.

General and Special Revelation

The Internal Standard

  • God does not judge only outward actions.

  • God also judges the heart, motives, and hidden life.

  • Jesus raises the standard by addressing internal sin.

  • The issue is not only what people do, but who they are before God.

The Law as a Magnifier

  • The Law reveals the distance between humanity and God.

  • The Law shows the need for the righteousness of Christ.

  • Scripture should make believers desire the work of the Holy Spirit.

  • The Law exposes sin, but it cannot change the heart.

The True Jew

  • Paul teaches that belonging to God’s people is an inward matter.

  • Circumcision was a major sign of Jewish identity, but it was not enough.

  • If the Law is broken, outward signs cannot save.

  • God is after the heart, not merely external religious identity.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

  • The inner work must be done by the Holy Spirit.

  • The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

  • The Holy Spirit makes believers the people of God.

  • Through Christ and the Spirit, a new era of salvation has come.
