Human beings are worshippers created to behold, adore, and glorify God. Worship must not be reduced to style, preference, or human enjoyment, but must be shaped by Scripture and directed toward God Himself. True worship is offered through Jesus Christ, formed by the whole counsel of Scripture, and expressed in ways that please God.

Humans Are Worshippers
Pastor Joel Roberto Guajardo

Worship in Scripture

  • This class begins by looking heavily at the Old Testament.

  • The Old Testament gives us one of the clearest views of worship.

  • Worship is not a side topic in Scripture.

  • The Old Testament is deeply concerned with how God’s people worship Him.

Humans Are Worshippers

  • Psalm 150:6 says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”

  • Human beings were created to behold and worship.

  • The human body is an adoration apparatus.

  • We are most alive when our worship is rightly directed toward God.

What Reveals Our Worship

  • What we always have money for can reveal what we adore.

  • What makes us lose track of time can reveal what we love.

  • What we worry about can reveal what we treasure.

  • Money, time, and obsession show where our worship is directed.

Worship and Church Traditions

  • Churches are often divided over styles and forms of worship.

  • Music style, hand-raising, clapping, lights, and traditions can become points of conflict.

  • The Church needs biblical principles that refocus worship on God.

  • Worship must be biblically rooted and theologically formed.

Old Testament and New Testament Worship

  • We should not create a false division between Old Testament and New Testament worship.

  • The Old Testament is not merely external ritual.

  • The New Testament is not merely internal experience.

  • Both Testaments show that God cares about the heart and the form of worship.

Worship in Spirit and Truth

  • John 4 teaches that worship shifts from place to manner.

  • Worship is now offered through Jesus Christ.

  • Through Christ, believers offer worship to God as New Testament priests.

  • Worship in Spirit and truth does not mean Old Testament worship lacked truth.

The Old Testament Still Forms Worship

  • All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for forming God’s people.

  • The early Church used the Old Testament as its Bible.

  • The Old Testament is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

  • It still has power to shape, renew, and transform believers.

True Worship

  • True worship is primarily vertical.

  • Worship is the human response to the Creator God.

  • The goal of worship is the glory of God, not merely human enjoyment.

  • Enjoying community, music, and people is good, but it is not the main point of worship.

Worship Forms Matter

  • Worship is not only internal; it is also external.

  • The forms of worship must conform to the will of God in Scripture.

  • God reveals what kinds of worship are acceptable to Him.

  • Because God is personal, His people should seek to worship Him in the way He desires.
